Susan Kolb, Ph.D. took over as Hood College's director of athletics on July 2, 2018. In the winter of 2023 she started Sports Xplore with the idea of bringing affordable sports and training to the local Frederick community.
Kolb arrives in Frederick after spending the past four years at the University of South Carolina Upstate, an NCAA Division I athletic program in Spartanburg, South Carolina. During her time there, she served on the senior athletic administration staff, administered academic policies to increase academic achievement and retention, and oversaw career and life skill programs for student-athletes. She also co-wrote NCAA grants, organized basketball promotions and took part in fundraising initiatives.
Prior to joining the Spartans, Kolb was an academic coordinator at George Mason University, serving as an academic advisor and as a liaison between the athletic department and the faculty.
Before moving into administration full-time, Kolb was both a head coach and administrator at Eastern Mennonite, a Division III university in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She began her stint at EMU as head coach of the women's soccer program and held the position, 2011-14. Four months into her stint with the Royals, she was promoted to assistant athletic director of student-athlete well-being. A year later, she took on the role as senior woman administrator. As a coach, she built the soccer program into a winning team with an-above-.500 record in three years. As an administrator, she oversaw academics, graduate assistants and helped with student-athlete programming.
Kolb got her start as an assistant coach at Bluffton University, a Division III school in Ohio. She also played semi-pro soccer in 2010 for the Charlotte Eagles.
She was a four-year letter winner on the women's soccer team at Davis & Elkins, a Division II program in Elkins, West Virginia. Kolb earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from D&E in 2009 in elementary education. She went on to earn a master's degree in instructional leadership at Bluffton. Kolb completed her doctorate in athletic administration from Northcentral University in March 2018.
Thomas Iskra is a native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, with a lengthy background in youth sports development. He joined Kolb in 2023 as an assistant for Sports Xplore, bringing experience working with various summer camp organizations focused on athletic training and mentorship. His diverse coaching portfolio includes roles with Bloomsburg AYSO, Abington AYSO, Bloomsburg University, Keystone University, Wyoming Seminary Lower School, BluePrint Soccer Organization, Electric City Shock NPSL Program, and other esteemed soccer programs.
Iskra began his collegiate journey at Bloomsburg University, having committed to play soccer during his senior year of high school. A 2023 graduate of Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, he distinguished himself as a standout athlete. He was a two-time Pennsylvania All-State First Team selection, a two-time Citizens' Voice Athlete of the Year, and the 2021 and 2022 NEPA High School Soccer Player of the Year. Additionally, he earned Wyoming Valley Conference First Team honors all four years, leading his team to three District II Championships. Over the course of his high school soccer career, he recorded an impressive 57 goals and 82 assists.
Beyond soccer, Iskra excelled in multiple sports at Wyoming Seminary. As a three-year varsity golfer, he contributed to two conference championships and a team conference gold medal, notably posting a career-low round of 74 at Fox Hill Country Club during the Ted Tryba High School Tournament. He was also a four-year varsity basketball letterman and a two-year captain of the Blue Knights basketball program. Additionally, he played two seasons of varsity lacrosse, achieving a 35-6 overall record while recording 14 goals and 24 assists, along with two district championships.
In his collegiate career, Iskra made an immediate impact as a redshirt freshman at Bloomsburg University, contributing to a historic 15-win season and the program’s first-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title in its 58-year history. His achievements extend beyond the field, as he was recognized as a 2023-2024 PSAC Scholar-Athlete, earning a place among an elite group of student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically.
